Hollywood Remembers Nichelle Nichols, Dies at 89

Nichelle Nichols was an incomparable trailblazer. She navigated a challenging trail with, grace and a gorgeous fire we are likely to see again, stated by her fellow “Star Trek” actress Kate Mulgrew. She is a legend, an icon and star. May she rest in peace. Her legacy will live on forever.

Kyle Johnson, son of Nichelle Nichols announced on her official Facebook page that the actress has died at the age of 89. His heartbreaking statement read “Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration. Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all.”

Her role as Uhura was one of the first ever Black women lead roles on the television series “Star Trek” created by Gene Roddenberry. Her role lasted for three seasons.
