Brittney Griner faces up to 9/12 years in prison
Brittney Griner has been detained in Russia for over five months on Feb. 17. She was taken from the Sheremetyevo International Airport in Khimki as she was returning to Russia to play during the WNBA’s off season. The WNBA star was found guilty on drug charges in a Moscow-area court Thursday.
The judge stated that Griner had criminal intent and said she is guilty of smuggling and storing drugs illegally. She was accused five months ago of having vape cartridges containing hashish oil, which is illegal in the country.
Prior to sentencing, she begged for leniency and asked the court to take into consideration her good character. She said she did not want to be considered a political pawn, and that bringing the cannabis pen into the country was a simple, ‘honest mistake’. A judge accepted her plea – finding her guilty on drug possession and smuggling. The prosecutor in the cased asked that Griner serve 9/12 years in prison. Griner is 31 years old and a Native of Houston, TX. She plays professional basketball for the Phoenix Mercury.
