Serena Williams announced on Tuesday that she will retire after the 2022 US Open at the end of August. It’s definitely a sad day for tennis fans around the world.

In the most recent issue of Vogue Magazine, as well as an Instagram post from her account, posted, ” There comes a time in life when we have to decide to move in a different direction. That time is always hard when you love something so much. My goodness do I enjoy tennis. But now, the countdown has begun. I have to focus on being a mom, my spiritual goals and finally discovering a different, but just exciting Serena. I’m gonna relish these next few weeks.”

In the article she states that she never liked the word retirement and that maybe the best word to describe what she is doing is “evolution.” She is evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to her. Williams admits that talking about is a very uncomfortable subject for her and it feels like it’s not real until you say it out loud.

The US open will start in August and run through September. This will be her final participation in the sport. At least in a major tournament. The legacy she will be leaving is that of 319 weeks as World #1, 7x Australian Open champion, 6x US Open champion, and 3x French Open champion. Wheeew! What a legacy to leave.

Serena we wish you the best and we look forward to seeing what you have planned in the future.
